Obituary

Walter F. Gaida, age 87, of Glenville, NY passed from this life at his home on August 13, 2018 in the company of loved ones.
Walter was born in Stillwater, NY on July 6, 1931. He was the son of Michael and Carrie (Ontkush) Gaida and came to Schenectady at a young age.
Walt worked at local steel fabricating businesses as a draftsman, estimator, and steel purchasing agent. He also worked part-time as a courier for Bellevue Women’s Hospital.
As a young man, he was a semi-pro pitcher for the Schenectady Twilight League. He also played baseball while serving in the U.S. Navy from 1951-55 and was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid.
Walt was an avid hunter and fisherman all his life. He enjoyed the outdoors and always looked forward to spending time out in nature with his family, whether it be biking, picnicking, camping, canoeing or hiking. He was also a great storyteller and as he would say, “And some be true.”
We would like to offer sincere thanks and gratitude to the VA Home Care Services and Hospice in his final days, as well as numerous neighbors and family members that offered love and support during this difficult time.
Walt is predeceased by his parents, his brothers Thomas & Gerald Gaida, and sister Helen Parry. Walt is survived by his wife Linda whom he married in 1967; two children from a former marriage, Deborah Gaida Ostrowski (John Miller) of Sprakers, NY and Thomas Gaida (Carol Hentnik) of Northville, NY; two children from his marriage to Linda, Cynthia Krowel (Scott Near) Galway, NY, Suzanne (Andrew) Johnson, Glenville, NY and stepson James Tortorella (Angela) Summerville, SC; grandchildren Victoria Gaida, Cory Ostrowski, Paul and Christina Krowel, Darren, Tyler, and Lindsey Johnson, and step grandchildren Taylor, James, and Jesse Tortorella. He is also survived by his sisters Carol Longo and Nancy Gaida, plus several nieces and nephews.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, August 16 from 4-7pm at Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Road, Ballston Lake, NY. A graveside service with military honors will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, NY on Friday, August 17th at 11am.

With confidence, the family has placed their trust in the loving care of the Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Road, Ballston Lake, and they encourage you to view and leave messages on Walter’s Book of Memories at www.TownleyWheelerFH.com
